The UIM F2 World Championship returned to action today as the third round of the competition got underway in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda.
Free practice Rookie Jarno Vilmunen go fastest in the 90-minute session despite immense pressure from the nineteen other drivers. In face, the lead boat throughout the session changed hands countless times, but it was the rookie racer who topped the table.
As the drivers headed into the weekend qualifying session, the first session would see all drivers compete for 20 minutes to see who would make the cut into the top 15 boats.
It was Lady Racer Mathilda Wiberg that led the way in Q1 nearly half a second faster than her closest rival and old F4 foe Jarno Vilmunen.
For Q3, we whittled away the fleet of drivers until just the top six remained. With Lithuania’s Edgaras clinching 4th place for the next session. On the very last lap. With #74 Giacomo Sacchi-Abbate grabbing the top spot.
Once more this season there was no stand out driver of the sessions as they headed into Q3 and the next 15 minutes would see the pole position swap hands and go right down to the final seconds of the session.
Mathilda Wiberg put in a flying lap, and as the session began to draw to a close, it was the Swedish driver looked set to secure her first Pole Position in F2.
However Finland’s Vilmunen had other ideas when, on his very last lap of the session, he pipped Mathilda to pole. But in a session that went down to the dying seconds, it was British Drive Matthew Palfreyman that clinched Pole position for the Grand Prix of Lithuania and will undoubtedly lead the way in the race tomorrow afternoon.
