Munthe-Kaas Wins Crazy Peso da Régua

Tobias Munthe-Kaas took his first UIM F2 World Championship win at Peso da Régua, heading home Ian Blacker and Owen Jelf on the podium in a Round 4 that reshaped the title race almost beyond recognition.

It was also a landmark for the engine in the back of his boat: the win marked the first time a Mercury Racing 250 APX four-stroke has won a UIM F2 race and stood on the podium, with Blacker’s second-place finish on the same power confirming it was no fluke.

Munthe-Kaas led from the front to take the 20 points, with Blacker second and Jelf completing the podium in third. Bimba Sjöholm, back in World Championship competition after a strong qualifying weekend, took fourth, with Duarte Benavente rounding out the top five.

The race brought turmoil for the championship’s front-runners. Nelson Morin retired early with a power steering issue. Edgaras Riabko, the championship leader coming into the round, was handed a one-lap penalty under UIM Rule 301.01 for missing a turn mark, dropping him to sixth. Giacomo Sacchi received a one-lap penalty of his own, finishing seventh.

The biggest blow of the afternoon came for the title fight itself: Mathilda Wiberg and Peter Morin collided as Wiberg attempted to pass him, ending both of their races. Wiberg was issued a yellow card for dangerous driving under UIM Rule 406.05 in connection with the incident. Hilmer Wiberg also failed to finish.

Riabko retains the championship lead heading into the season finale at Vila Velha de Ródão, but his advantage has been cut to seven points over Peter Morin, with Mathilda Wiberg, Hilmer Wiberg and Munthe-Kaas all still within range of the title with one round remaining.
