Erik Stark was crowned F2 World champion for a fourth consecutive time when he won the final round of the championship in Sasolburg, South Africa. Fifteen boats lined up on the jetty to participate in the race after Bimba Sjoholm and Mette Bjerknaes had to pull out of the race when they had damaged their boats the previous day. When the lights went out it was Stark that took the lead ahead of Rupp Temper of Austria and Erik Edin of Sweden.
As the race progressed Edin started to fall down the field when his engine started to encounter electrical problems which lead to his retirement from the race on lap 24 allowing Johan Österberg of Sweden to take third position ahead of Pierre Lundin also from Sweden who had started from tenth position on the grid had made his way through the field and was chasing Österberg for third place. However Österberg used all his experience to keep the position.
Peter Morin of France who mathematically was the only driver who could win the championship was in fifth position trying to find a away past Lundin. The battle between Österberg, Lundin and Morin was very exciting to watch as they provided some very close racing about 10 laps. There were also some great battles taking place throughout the field with Owen Jelf of the UK and Attie Tromp of South Africa having a very close race in the early part of the race. Jelf finally finishing in eleventh position even though his engine had thrown a con rod out of the side of the engine.
When Stark took the chequered flag there was still five other boats on the lead lap with Temper, Österberg, Lundin, Morin and Tomas Cermak of Slovakia racing for the iBoat racing team. Maicol Chiossi and Chiara Rossi both from Italy had a slight coming together but both boats were able to continue. Rossi having a good race but was given a one lap penalty after she had hit a turn buoy placing her in tenth position overall.
Local driver Wynand De Jager racing for South Africa had to retire from the race on lap 25 after a battery cable problem sadly ending his race early. The final top three drivers were Erik Stark of Sweden, Rupp Temper of Austria and Johan Österberg of Sweden.
The award ceremony also saw the medals for the F2 World Championship Series given to Erik Stark of Sweden, Peter Morin of France and Peter Lundin of Sweden.
